Headaches & Migraines

Headaches may have other causes that aren't as apparent at first, such as poor posture.

Headaches may have other causes that aren't as apparent at first, such as poor posture.

Treating headaches and migraines involves first a thorough assessment, as there are thought to be over 300 causes! Most will however fall into three categories:

  • Neck headaches (or in fancy terms cervicogenic)
  • Tension Type headaches
  • Migraines

In a small percentage of patients there can be very serious causes of their headaches including brain tumours, aneurysms or other illness. For this reason our physiotherapists will ask you a battery of questions and perform a thorough assessment to ensure they are confident of the likely cause of your headache before deciding if physiotherapy treatment is right for you.

For most people falling into the three categories above, physiotherapy can have a significant impact in treating your pain and dysfunction and even play a role in preventing further headaches.

Correct diagnosis is the first key to successful treatment. Once we have assessed you, therapy involves a wide variety of tools and techniques depending on the individual presentation. These include:

  • Soft tissue massage and manual therapy
  • Manipulation
  • Acupuncture and dry needling
  • Posture correction
  • Ergonomics review
  • Exercise including closed chain strengthening, scapular stabilisation and proprioception
  • Electrotherapy and local modalities
  • Stretching
  • Kinseio taping and strapping techniques
